All Saints' Church was built during the early Anglo-Saxon period two to three hundred years after the Romans left Britain...

MAKING A DONATION

‘Together we can secure the future of the Anglo-Saxon Church at Brixworth’.

The majority of our funding comes from our own endeavours through fundraising events, sales of publications, hire fees of the Heritage Centre and guided tours/visitors to the Church.

We receive no regular funding from the Government or the Church of England towards maintenance, restoration, or development work.

ALL SAINTS’CHURCH BRIXWORTH

ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH, BRIXWORTH

In a book published in 1930 a distinguished author described our church as ‘perhaps the most imposing architectural memorial of the seventh century yet surviving north of the Alps’. Though there may have been a church here at that early date, the present building cannot have been put up before around AD740 and possibly not until about AD800. Compared with most parish churches though, that is still very early: All Saints’ has stood here since around 300 years before the Norman Conquest. Imposing it must have been, since the body of the original building was surrounded by side chambers, maybe chapels, vestries or meeting rooms, and the church was thus twice its present width.

So much history, so many puzzles?  What is certain is that All Saints’ has been in use as a Christian place of worship for over 1200 years, and The Friends exist to help maintain the historic fabric of the building, to promote interest in all aspects of its history, and to contribute towards measures which make it more user-friendly for the congregation and its visitors alike.
